Rapidlogger Hardware - Rotary Collector

The Rapidlogger rotary collector is a slip ring that carries electrical power and signal between a rotating drill pipe and stationary surface equipment without restraining the rotation. It was designed for drill pipe and is used to connect a directional drilling tool or other downhole instrument to the surface acquisition equipment while the pipe turns.

Who uses it

Directional drilling and surface readout crews that need a wired connection through the rotating string, coiled tubing and workover operations where a rotating section sits between the tool and the surface, and rig instrumentation integrators who feed the signal into a Rapidlogger EDR or drilling rig monitoring system.

How it works

The collector mounts on the pipe and provides continuity between the rotating pipe and the stationary side while the drilling process is in progress, so the circuit stays closed through continuous rotation. The signal and power lines leave the stationary side on a cable to the surface equipment. It is also used on coiled tubing where a rotating section sits between the tool and the surface.
