Rapidlogger EDR System for Workover Rigs

The Rapidlogger NextGen EDR is an electronic drilling recorder for land and offshore workover rigs. It measures, displays, records and charts every sensor reading on the rig, from the mud pumps to the block, and keeps a time-stamped job file that can be charted and reported with the RapidVu software. System configurations are available for both safe and hazardous areas, and the system is simple to install, calibrate and use.

Who uses it

Workover and well-servicing contractors who need a rig record without the cost of a full drilling EDR, rig owners retrofitting instrumentation to older rigs, and operators who want standpipe pressure, hook load, pit volumes and depth visible in the doghouse and in the office. Because the Rapidlogger records on its own, the rig keeps a job file even when no PC is connected.

What it records

A typical system is configured for:

• Pump rate and total for one or more mud, cement or kill pumps, from proximity-switch stroke counters or flowmeters
• Pit levels and volumes for up to 12 pits per unit, with inflow, outflow and total active volume
• Hook load from the deadline anchor load cell, with weight on bit and slip load calculated
• Return flow from the Rapidlogger returns flow sensor in the flow line
• Standpipe pressure, casing and annulus pressures from wing-union or flange-mounted transducers
• Block position, bit depth and hole depth from a drawworks encoder, with rate of penetration and ton-miles calculated
• Rotary speed and torque, top-drive RPM and engine RPM where fitted

The drilling mode has built-in calculations for slip position, pipe, bit and hole depth, ton-miles, ROP, weight on bit, differential pressure, circulating time and mud volume in and out. Drilling setups are prepared at the Rapidlogger factory for each rig, and a sample setup file is available from support.

Display and communication

The main unit shows live values on its backlit LCD. A remote display can be added for the driller, and a PC running RapidVu in driller display mode shows large dials and traces at the rig floor or in the office (see Tech Note 110). Data leaves the unit over serial, Ethernet or WiFi as WITS, MODBUS, OPC or ASCII streams, so it can feed a mud-logging unit or the company man's laptop. Several Rapidlogger units can be linked as master and slave over CAN bus, and the optional cloud data gateway sends the job to a remote office in real time.

Certification

Hazardous-area versions of the Rapidlogger NextGen unit carry ATEX certification (II 3 G Ex nA IIC T5 Gc, Zone 2, certificate ITS15ATEX48263X) and are CE marked. The ATEX certificate is on the manuals and documents page.
